They can assist in indicating what type of problem you are having and can also help in locating the source of leakage.\u00a0 Some typical indicators are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000080; font-family: Arial;\"><strong>Dampness\/Staining On Carpets<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial;\"> &#8211; Can indicate past leakage. Identify when and in which locations in the basement, this occurs<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Efflorescence<\/span><\/strong> &#8211; A whitish mineral deposit that many times is visible on masonry surfaces.\u00a0 Usually the result of water passing through the wall.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Mold\/Mildew<\/span><\/strong> &#8211; Usually located on or near, an area that has seen prolonged moisture, giving the mold a chance to grow.\u00a0 Often associated with an unpleasant odor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rust Stains<\/span><\/strong> &#8211; Sometimes seen on concrete floors and carpet, usually due to rusted metal feet on furniture. Rusty nails on baseboards, electrical boxes, etc., all indicate evidence of past moisture.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Stained\/Darkened Wood<\/span><\/strong> &#8211; Can indicate past water absorption, due to leakage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Dampness\/Staining Around Floor Cracks<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; Can indicate that water is forcing itself up though the cracks, due to pressure, water table, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080; font-family: Arial;\">Water Bugs<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"> &#8211; Look for evidence of small insects along the baseboards, behind sofas, in corners, etc.\u00a0 Some types of insects gravitate towards areas of moisture.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-large; color: #0000ff;\">Preventing Water Entry<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: medium; color: #000000;\">The two most common causes I have found that allow water into your basement are downspouts and landscaping.\u00a0 That pretty planter against your foundation maybe trapping hundreds of gallons of water and directing\u00a0 it down your foundation.\u00a0 Downspouts should have extensions directing water away from your home.\u00a0 The minimum recommended grade sloping away from your house is between 2-3 inches every 6 feet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A sitting puddle of water beside your home is a sure indicator that you have a landscaping issue.\u00a0 The indicators of drainage issues in your yard may be a little more subtle than that. Here are a few telltale signs that indicate you need to divert water in your yard:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Overflowing gutters<\/li>\n<li>Drifting mulch<\/li>\n<li>Pooling water<\/li>\n<li>Soggy ground<\/li>\n<li>Efflorescence or flaking walls in your basement<\/li>\n<li>Basement leaks<\/li>\n<li>Mildew odors<\/li>\n<li>Mold<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.napoleon.cc\/tips\/basements-cracks-and-water-leaks\/\">Read about Foundation Cracks and Water Leaks by Barrie Home Inspector.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; Identify when and in which locations in the basement, this occurs<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Efflorescence<\/span><\/strong> - A whitish mineral deposit that many times is visible on masonry surfaces.&nbsp; Usually the result of water passing through the wall.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Mold\/Mildew<\/span><\/strong> - Usually located on or near, an area that has seen prolonged moisture, giving the mold a chance to grow.&nbsp; Often associated with an unpleasant odor.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rust Stains<\/span><\/strong> - Sometimes seen on concrete floors and carpet, usually due to rusted metal feet on furniture.
