_builder_version=&#8221;4.9.9&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<h1><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Electrical Defects in your Home<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>\u00a0Electrical deficiencies are one of the most common items identified during a home inspection. \u00a0Some of the items we are going to cover are: double taps, reversed polarity, aluminum wiring, knob and tube, openings in panel board and electrical panels in bathrooms. \u00a0If you purchase a home that has faulty or improperly installed electrical wiring it then becomes your problem.\u00a0 After spending over 20 years of inspecting residential homes I am still amazed at the amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.napoleon.cc\/barrie-home-inspection-defect-gallery\/electrical-defects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Electrical Defects found in Homes\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Do It Yourself Wiring<\/span><\/strong><\/a> I find in homes.\u00a0 When investing in a property Identify these problems prior to purchasing is really importan.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-electrical-defects-common-issues\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Electrical Defects &#8211; Common Issues<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Double Tap Connections<\/span><\/strong>: \u00a0This refers to the practice of adding another circuit to a breaker or fuse connection in the main panel. \u00a0Typically one one wire connection per fuse or breaker is permitted. \u00a0There are some panels, such<a href=\"https:\/\/www.napoleon.cc\/electrical-defects\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/napoleon.cc\/tips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Aluminum-Wiring-Barrie-Home-Inspector-300x239.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" alt=\"Aluminum Wiring - Barrie Home Inspector\" class=\"wp-image-10700 alignright size-medium lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/napoleon.cc\/tips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Aluminum-Wiring-Barrie-Home-Inspector-300x239.png 300w, https:\/\/napoleon.cc\/tips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Aluminum-Wiring-Barrie-Home-Inspector.png 347w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/239;\" \/><\/a> as Square D that are designed to have two wires per breaker connection but you would then have to ensure that you are not overloading the breaker or fuse, \u00a0this would require examination by a licensed electrician.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Reversed Polarity: \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This occurs when the hot and neutral connections are reversed. \u00a0This is a safety hazard due to shock potential. \u00a0For example when screwing in a light bulb, the threaded socket is now live and will give you a shock if touched. \u00a0Black wire, which is hot wire, should be attached to dark screw on duplex receptacle and the white wire, which is neutral, should be attached to light coloured screw.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Aluminum Wiring:\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Aluminum wiring was used in residential construction from the late 1960&#8217;s to the late 70&#8217;s due to high copper prices. \u00a0There are many articles written about aluminum wiring which detail its inherent weaknesses and possible over heating possibilities. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-electrical-defects-aluminum-wiring\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Electrical Defects &#8211; Aluminum Wiring<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), &#8220;Homes wired with aluminum wire manufactured before 1972 [&#8216;old technology&#8217; aluminum wire] are 55 times more likely to have one or more connections reach &#8220;Fire Hazard Conditions&#8221; than is a home wired with copper.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Aluminum wiring is required to be larger in size than copper due to electrical resistance. \u00a0Aluminum is less ductile which makes it more susceptible to breaking, it is also subject to galvanic corrosion when in contact with other metals. \u00a0Many insurance companies will not insure homes that have aluminum wiring installed or will require a Certificate from ESA or Master Electrician prior to insuring. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.napoleon.cc\/electrical-defects\/\"> Read more about aluminum wiring.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Knob &amp; Tube Wiring: \u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Installed in residential homes up to the 1930&#8217;s, K &amp; T is single insulated copper wires installed using porcelain insulating tubes and porcelain knob insulators. \u00a0Most insurance companies will not insure a home with knob and tube wiring installed. \u00a0Due to the age of wire the insulation is almost always deteriorated and rodent damage to insulation in attics. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.napoleon.cc\/tag\/knob-and-tube\/\">Read more about Knob and Tube wiring.<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Openings in Panel Boards: \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Openings in panel boards and electrical boxes are not permitted as they could allow hot sparks to exit and kids could stick their fingers or metal object into opening. Fill any openings with either knock out plugs or blanks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Electrical Panels in Bathrooms: \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Electrical panel boards are not permitted to be installed in bathrooms in Ontario. \u00a0Older homes maybe grandfather protected but you would have to contact ESA for a date that the code came into effect and also know the age of bathroom installation. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.napoleon.cc\/tips\/electrical-panels-bathrooms-barrie-home-inspector\/\">Read more information on electrical panels in bathrooms.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_4,1_4,1_4,1_4&#8243;
